Copyright registration protects works of authorship, such as writings, music, architectural designs, computer software, and two- and three-dimensional works of art that have been tangibly expressed. Copyrights protect an artist, composer or author’s unique expression of an idea, not the idea itself. Works are deemed copyrighted even without registration. Should your work be infringed, however, you will only be entitled to statutory damages and a potential award of attorney’s fees if your work was registered prior to the act of infringement. Copyright registrations last for the life of the author plus 70 years.
